D. STRUCTURAL REPAIRS

  1. How do you repair damages to structural elements like RCC columns, beams and slabs?
  2. How are 'repairs' to a cracked wall or column or beam carried out?
  3. How do you repair or seal cracks which appear between Brick walls and Columns?

1. How do you repair damages to structural elements like RCC columns, beams and slabs ?

Damages to structural members viz. RCC columns, beams, slabs often are due to corrosion of reinforcement steel, as a result of chloride ingress or carbonation. Poor workmanship could be an additional contributing factor. The best procedure would be to:

  1. Remove all the loose concrete completely and clean the reinforcement with wire brush.
  2. Apply Rusticide by means of cotton waste or swab to the reinforcement.
  3. After 24 hrs. apply a passivating coat of Polyalk Fixoprime/cement slurry in 1: 1.25 proportion to the chemically derusted surface of steel.
  4. Apply a priming cum bonding coat of Polyalk EP/Cement slurry in the proportion of 1: 0.5 by weight by brush to the concrete.
  5. Immediately place polymer modified mortar prepared by mixing:
    1 kg. Polyalk EP
    5 kgs. Cement (fresh)
    15 kgs. Quartz Sand (graded)
Water quantity sufficient to reach desired consistency.
  6. Finish the surface with 1:4 Cement : Mortar
  7. Cure as usual

2. How are 'repairs' to a cracked wall or column or beam carried out?

Repairs to the cracks in walls, columns or beams can be carried out by the following method given below :

  1. Remove all the loose concrete completely and clean the reinforcement with wire brush.
  2. Apply Rusticide by means of cotton waste swab to reinforcement.
  3. After 24 hours apply a passivating coat of Polyalk Fixoprime/Cement slurry 1: 1.50 proportion to the chemically de-rusted surface of steel.
  4. Apply a priming cum bonding coat of Polyalk EP/Cement slurry in proportion 1:1 by weight to the concrete by brush.
  5. Immediately place polymer modified mortar prepared by mixing:
    1 kg. Polyalk EP
    5 kgs. Cement (fresh)
    15 kgs. Quartz Sand (graded)
    Sufficient water to desired consistency
  6. After 15-20 minutes level the surface with steel trowel.
  7. After 48 hours cure by sprinkling water 2-3 days.
  8. Finish the surface with 1:4 Cement Mortar.

3. How do you repair or seal cracks which appear between Brick walls and Columns?

In order to repair or seal cracks which appear between brick walls and column. Follow the steps given below :

  1. Open the cracks into "V" groove, clean and moisten the groove.
  2. Apply a priming cum bonding coat of Polyalk EP / Cement slurry in the proportion 1:1 (by wt.) with brush to grooved surface.
  3. Immediately, fill the groove with polymer modified mortar which is prepared by mixing :-
    2 kgs. Polyalk EP
    5 kgs. Cement (fresh)
    15 kgs. Quartz Sand (graded)
After 15-20 minutes level the surface with steel trowel.
  4. After 48 hours cure by sprinkling water for 2-3 days.
  5. Further finishing process can then follow.

Note : To repair any crack even in RCC the above method is suitable.
