Anjur Bridge across Ulhas River at Thane.
The Anjur Bridge, built across the Ulhas River in Thane, Maharashtra, is a landmark project spanning about 1.31 km, with 878 m stretching directly over the river. It is designed as a composite structure of RCC and structural steel.
The bridge consists of 15 steel spans, each measuring 54.55 m, supported on RCC approaches and piers.
This project came with its share of challenges – from the site conditions and geographical factors to the specialized task of sandblasting and protecting the massive steel sections. The Sunanda team addressed these challenges by providing advanced coating solutions, ensuring durability and long-term performance of the bridge.

Problem Statement & Scope of Work :
The steel spans of the Anjur Bridge were exposed to harsh environmental conditions, including constant moisture, saline air, and industrial pollutants. Over time, these factors led to surface rusting, reduced protective capacity of existing coatings, and a risk of long-term structural deterioration.
To ensure durability and restore the protective system, the scope of work included :
- Removal of rust and prevention of further corrosion.
- Protection of steel surfaces through epoxy resin.
- Application of a high-build, anti-corrosive coating system for long-term
protection. - Use of weather-resistant and abrasion-resistant top coats suitable for saline and chemical-prone environments.
Solution Proposed & Product Used:
A multi-layered protective coating system was implemented to restore and safeguard the steel components of the bridge. Each stage was carefully executed to achieve both immediate restoration and long-term durability.
1. Rust Remover and Passivator – RUSTICIDE
RUSTICIDE is a single-component, sulphate and chloride-free liquid that removes rust and prevents further corrosion in a single application. It was applied to the affected steel surfaces using cotton waste swabs to ensure thorough coverage.
2. Primer Coat : Two-Component Anti-Corrosive, Low VOC, Coating
A specially formulated to create a durable protective layer suitable for both vertical and horizontal surfaces. Once cured, it forms a smooth, hygienic film resistant to a wide range of mineral acids, organic acids, alkalis, fats, and oils.
3. Two Coats of Two-Component, Air Drying, Anti-Corrosive and UV Resistant Proprietary Coating
A two-component, air-drying, aliphatic, non-yellowing high-gloss finish coat was developed and applied. It offers excellent weather resistance, colour retention, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance. Its strong adhesion to concrete and a variety of surfaces makes it an ideal choice for corrosion protection in saline and chemical-prone environments. The coating was applied using spray and brush.
The entire treatment process was carried out strictly in line with tender specifications and quality benchmarks. All structural steel elements were systematically treated and coated, ensuring long-lasting protection and extended service life of the bridge.
