The Tidel U-Shaped Flyover is a landmark infrastructure project designed to ease traffic congestion at the busy Tidel Park junction near Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. Strategically connecting the IT corridor along Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) with East Coast Road (ECR) and surrounding areas, it enables smoother traffic movement towards Adyar, Velachery, and Sholinganallur.

Problem Statement & Scope :
Urban flyovers in coastal cities like Chennai are constantly exposed to harsh environmental conditions, including salinity, heavy rains, moisture, air pollution, and chemical contaminants. These factors accelerate corrosion of reinforced concrete and steel elements, reducing the service life of the structure.
Traditional protective coatings often fail to withstand such aggressive exposure, leading to frequent repairs, increased maintenance costs, and disruptions to traffic flow.
The key challenge was to implement a protective coating system that:
- Offered superior resistance to corrosion and chemical attack
- UV resistant
- Was eco-friendly and safe for large-scale public infrastructure
- Could be applied efficiently and quickly to minimize delays
- Ensured structural durability and long-term cost savings
The scope therefore involved selecting a high-performance multi-layer protective system capable of withstanding Chennai’s demanding coastal- urban environment, while also ensuring longevity, safety, and minimal lifecycle costs.
Solution Proposed & Product Used:
To protect the flyover against corrosion and extend its service life, Sunanda Speciality Coatings Pvt. Ltd. proposed a multi-layer epoxy and polyurethane protective system consisting of:
1. SUNEPOXY PRIME (Multi-Purpose Epoxy Coating)
- Applied as a primer coat to ensure excellent adhesion.
- Non-toxic and safe for public infrastructure projects.
2. SUNEPOXY PAINT (Epoxy Paint for Chemical and Corrosion Resistance)
- Applied as the intermediate protective layer on concrete and steel.
- Provided outstanding resistance against corrosion, abrasion, and chemical pollutants including acids, alkalis, and solvents.
- Enhanced durability of structural members and reinforcement.
3. SUNPUGARD (Two-Component Aliphatic Polyurethane Finish Paint)
- Used as the final topcoat to offer UV resistance, colour and gloss retention, and protection against carbonation.
- Delivered weather resistance, minimizing maintenance frequency.
- Prolonged the overall service life of the structure.
Conclusion :
Client has successfully used a high performance protective coating system covering a total area of approximately 25,000 sqm. The application was carried out in the year 2023.
The performance of these products has been extremely satisfactory to date, offering durable protection and reducing maintenance needs. The Sunanda technical team displayed excellent expertise, addressing all queries promptly and effectively. Supply and application of the products were completed smoothly and on schedule.
