10 Simple Steps to Fully Waterproof Bathrooms
Follow these practical steps to ensure your bathroom stays dry, leak-free, and well-protected using POLYALK WP, a reliable waterproofing solution.
1. Surface Preparation is Key
Proper surface preparation is crucial for effective waterproofing. Start by scrubbing and cleaning the surface to remove dirt, paint, laitance, loose flakes, and any foreign particles. Use a vacuum cleaner, high-pressure water jet, wet sandblasting, or wire brushing to ensure a clean and open-pore texture on the concrete surface.
2. Repair Any Cracks or Damaged Areas
Inspect the walls and floors for cracks, honeycombing, or other damage. Fill larger cracks with a suitable repair mortar and use POLYFILL AR, our elastomeric acrylic crack filler, to treat hairline cracks in plaster or mortar. This step helps prevent water from seeping through weak spots.
3. Remove Curing Compounds and Sealers
Before applying the waterproofing coat, make sure to remove any curing compounds or sealers from the concrete surface. This ensures proper bonding of the waterproofing layer and enhances the longevity of the coating.
4. Pre-wet the Surface
Twenty-four hours before the waterproofing process, moisten the bathroom surface by spraying water. Keeping the surface damp (not wet) helps the waterproofing slurry adhere better to the substrate.
5. Prepare the POLYALK WP Waterproofing Mix
Mix 1 part of POLYALK WP with 1 to 1.25 parts of fresh white or grey cement. Stir continuously by hand to achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency. Keep stirring the mixture while applying to maintain uniformity.
6. Apply the First Coat of Waterproofing
Using a brush or roller, apply the first coat of the POLYALK WP slurry to the damp bathroom surface. Ensure even coverage, reaching corners, joints, and pipe fittings to prevent any weak spots.
7. Apply Additional Coats for Better Protection
Allow the first coat to dry for 24 hours before applying the second coat at right angles to the first. For maximum durability, apply a third coat if necessary, maintaining the same time interval between layers.
8. Allow Proper Setting Time
Once all coats have been applied, let the waterproofing layers set for 24-48 hours. Avoid exposing the coated surface to heavy moisture or foot traffic during this period to ensure proper curing.
9. Curing the Coated Surface
Cure the coating for 2-3 days by sprinkling water on vertical surfaces (like bathroom walls) three times a day. For horizontal surfaces (such as floors), cover them with moist gunny bags to retain moisture and aid the curing process.
10. Provide a Protective Layer
For flat bathroom surfaces, apply a protective screed or plaster over the POLYALK WP coating to safeguard it from mechanical damage. For external bathroom walls, an additional protective coating of our SUNEXT-8, a heat-insulating, anti-carbonation exterior coating, is recommended to extend the lifespan of the waterproofing system.
